Day 29: What's your favourite time of the year and why?
I could actually take each season and list the things I love about it, but I think I'd probably have the most to say about Autumn. Until a couple of months ago, I still had a few of my beloved Shirley Hughes books in my room. One of these includes a poem, which describes perfectly my romantic view of this season. In fact, it was probably the beautiful pictures in the book that sparked my love of Autumn in the first place!
A really strong memory I have is of me in the garden with my Dad as he raked up all the dead leaves that had created a crunchy carpet over the grass. When he had made a big heap of leaves, I would excitedly throw myself into it, before emerging, all smiles and rosy cheeks. I was wearing this chunky green knitted jumper, and I remember that all the leaves stuck to it so that I had to pick them off one by one.
Instead of writing yet another list, I'm going to leave you with another childhood inspiration of mine- this time a song we used to sing during 'Singing Assembly' at primary school. It's called 'Autumn Days'.
Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
And the silk inside a chestnut shell
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All these things I love so well
So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn’t forget.
Clouds that look like familiar faces
And a winter’s moon with frosted rings
Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces
And the song the milkman sings.
So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn’t forget.
Whipped-up spray that is rainbow-scattered
And a swallow curving in the sky
Shoes so comfy though they’re worn out and they’re battered
And the taste of apple pie.
So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn’t forget.
Scent of gardens when the rain’s been falling
And a minnow darting down a stream
Picked-up engine that’s been stuttering and stalling
And a win for my home team.
So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn’t forget.
